Environmentally Friendly Printing |
|
SunSign Graphic Design only purchases printing from companies that take steps to minimize their environmental footprint.
Our main vendor was one of the first in the nation to convert to soy-based inks for printing, eliminating petroleum-based inks. Soy ink is environmentally friendly ink due to it's composition of mostly organic compounds, and is manufactured by a simple, low-energy process. Soy ink has many advantages; the main advantage being it's clarity, allowing for bright, vibrant colors. Soy ink is also easily cleansed from paper, which minimizes the time and effort needed to recycle paper products.
Our main paper-product vendor also uses environmentally friendly UV coating, consisting of very low to zero amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOC). These harmful compounds damage the atmosphere and the surrounding environments. Press rollers, fountain solutions and blankets also use solutions which contain minimal traces of VOC's. All solutions and hazardous waste is removed from the facility and properly disposed of. Additionally, no alcohol is used in the facility, only alcohol substitutes.
And of course... all paper is certified to come from trees specifically planted for paper production, and absolutely no illegally deforested trees are used.

FREE Benefit Concert! April 18, 2008 |
|
Join Chords For A Cause at the Lincoln Theater in Raleigh on April 18, 2008 for a benefit show to raise money for Doctors Without Borders, in an effort to bring medical care to the victims of genocide in Darfur. Click here to view the poster!
Admission is free with a suggested donation. The headlining band is my personal favorite local band, Nathan Asher and the Infantry, along with the Future Kings of Nowhere, several other awesome, talented groups, and speakers to bring awareness to and medical attention for the ruthless torture and killing of the people of Darfur. If you can't come out and would still like to donate, please visit: www.chordsforacause.org or just email us here at SunSign, and we will point you in the right direction. See you there!

It's Easy Being Green! |
|
Earth Day is April 22, 2008. Going green may sound daunting, but even a tiny change in your daily habits can make a huge impact. The world may not be trashed in our lifespan, but consider our children, our grandchildren, and their children when you toss that aluminum can in the trash. A butterfly flaps it's wings in the rainforest, and well, you know the rest. In the workplace, we can start by making these 10 tiny changes!
-
Separate your trash can into 3 sections, or put 2 additional bags on the outside (and reuse them, of course!). One for non-recyclable trash, one for paper (use a shredder for important documents), and one for aluminum cans and plastic bottles.
-
Instead of using that cool flying kitten screensaver, set your monitor to turn off after 10-15 minutes of inactivity.
-
Turn off the light and open the blinds or curtains, and enjoy the beautiful sunlight instead of that nasty fluorescent lighting.
-
Instead of bringing pre-packaged convenience snacks, reduce waste by buying the snacks you love in bulk, such as pretzels, fruit, trail mix, nuts, or cheese. Package them in reusable containers, and watch your pockets grow! Bulk snacks are generally much cheaper than their convenient little buddies.
-
Buy a filtered water pitcher instead of using individual bottles. Save money AND reduce waste.
-
How many times a day do you really use your printer? If the answer is once or twice, turn it off when you aren't using it. Even in low-energy consumption mode, printers and other peripherals do use a considerable amount of energy.
-
Turn down the heat in the winter, and wear warmer clothes.
-
Turn down the air conditioner in the summer, and wear lighter clothes. If you work from home, and are there by yourself, wear shorts... but change before that afternoon meeting!
-
If you just need a breeze, instead of having a full-size desk fan, try a USB Fly Fan! They run off of the USB ports on your laptop or desktop, use little power, and provide a nice breeze.
-
Use the phone, email, or internet conferencing instead of having unnecessary meetings and wasting gas. Consider this: if you drive to 5 meetings a week just to pick up a check, go over a few details, or sign off on paperwork, and on average you drive 10 miles round-trip to each meeting... that is a total of 50 miles. If your car gets on average 25 MPG, that is 2 gallons of gas per week. At the current average of $3.30 per gallon, you are spending $6.60 per week. Multiply that by 52 weeks, and you've wasted $343.20 in gas... and prices are going up every day!
